Becoming a Confident English Speaker: Mastering the Art of Comunication

Speaking a new language with confidence has little to do with how “advanced” you are, or even how “perfect” your accent is!

Speaking English fluently can be challenging for many people due to the insecurity caused by accents and pronunciation differences. However, this barrier can be overcome with the right strategies. In our recent July Master Class, titled “Becoming a Confident English Speaker,” taught by Professor Simonne Peloquin, key aspects of improving English communication skills and developing the confidence needed to express oneself fluently were addressed. This session brought together language enthusiasts of various levels and focused on practical techniques to tackle common challenges when learning English.

Reflecting on the features of the language we want to learn will be very helpful in positively approaching the obstacles we may face as learners. One of the main reasons why students fear speaking in public is the difficulties in pronunciation that the English language presents, such as the system of vowel sounds, the variety of accents, silent letters and their unusual combinations, final consonants, and the difference between spelling and pronunciation.Truthfully, there is nothing to fear if we dare to seek help from the right person.

Some of the tips provided in this Master Class emphasized that consistent practice and continuous exposure to the English language are essential for improving pronunciation:

Classes and tutoring

A structured approach through classes or tutoring with an experienced English teacher can help you gain confidence and receive direct feedback.

Practicing with native speakers

Participating in group classes with native teachers is a great advantage as they can help you work specifically on your pronunciation and fluency.

Imitating pronunciation models

Listening carefully to native English speakers in movies, TV shows, podcasts, and online videos is very helpful. Try to imitate their pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm to improve your pronunciation skills.

Online learning resources

Use applications and websites that focus on English pronunciation. Some of these resources provide guided pronunciation exercises and interactive activities.

Recordings and self-assessment

Record your own voice while practicing and then listen to identify areas that need improvement. Self-assessment allows you to be aware of your mistakes and progress.

Practicing reading aloud

Regularly reading aloud can help you become familiar with the sounds and structures of the English language.

Contextualizing pronunciation

Learn words and phrases in meaningful contexts so that you can better remember them and apply the correct pronunciation in real situations.

Patience and consistency

Learning a new pronunciation takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and maintain consistency in your practice.

Another relevant aspect addressed in this Master Class was undoubtedly the role that active listening plays when learning and/or interacting in an English conversation. We know that many other factors come into play in verbal communication, such as gestures, facial expressions, and posture, which are crucial when conveying and receiving a message.

Imagine, if we sometimes have communication problems in our own language! What would happen if we don’t fully focus on our interlocutor when practicing English?

Professor Peloquin suggests following these simple steps to interact actively with your interlocutor and achieve a fluent English conversation:

  • Pay total attention to your interlocutor.
  • Paraphrase the main ideas to show that you have understood the message.
  • Ask open-ended questions about the topic.
  • Use verbal cues to affirm or negate.
  • Empathize and validate your interlocutor’s emotions.
  • Avoid distractions.

The highlight of our Master Class was the powerful reflection that teacher Peloquin shared with the session participants: Have you ever wondered why the lion is the king of the jungle? “While size, strength, and speed are admirable qualities, they don’t define a true leader. A king is not only measured by physical attributes but by the courage and wisdom that reside within.” Self-confidence and the eagerness to pursue our deepest dreams are ultimately the key to achieving them. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; get in touch with us and dare to speak.

At the end of our session, the participants felt empowered to embrace linguistic diversity, improve their accent and pronunciation, practice active listening, and develop self-confidence. Through these strategies, we believe we have provided the key that unlocks a world of opportunities, both personally and professionally. English mastery is within everyone’s reach, and with determination and practice, each participant is ready to conquer the challenge and become a confident and effective English speaker!

At Start Speaking Today, we take pride in providing our students with the necessary tools to make the language their own and express themselves with freedom and confidence.
